Wombs of Wata: A Return to the Ceremony of Birth

The first birth keeper program in Sénégal.

8-14 December 2024

Deadline to apply: 23h59 UTC (5:59 pm EST | 2:59 pm PST) on 31 January 2024

Wombs of Wata is a womb-to-tomb care and wellness practice. Our work centers embodying traditional midwifery practices from the African continent and diaspora. We invite aspiring and experienced birth attendants, doulas, birth workers, midwives, and womb keepers to join us in Senegal for a week of ceremony, birth and womb education, collective wisdom sharing, and fellowship. Our immersive and original birth worker program is facilitated by Senegalese midwives, Bajenu Gox, and our founder and traditional birth keeper, Joyell Arvella.

This is a program for participants who seek dedicated space to hold up a mirror to their birth and womb practices. Embodying the traditional African midwife, being invited into communities to offer birth work while traveling consciously, tending to our mother-child biases and wounds, and learning rituals to honor the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth are our focus areas. This is a space to take care of birth keepers.

Space is limited to ensure Wombs of Wata is an intimate container for connection, learning, and vulnerability. Our cohort includes up to 7 Home Residents and 3 Traveling Residents. See below for more information. Please note that we are a child-friendly program so bring your babies! There is no additional cost for children under 5 years old.

What we are looking for: Wombs of Wata seeks applications from birth attendants, doulas, birth workers, midwives, and womb keepers. All levels of experience are welcome. Applications from people of the global majority who are committed to conscious travel and have an interest in indigenous African spiritual practices are strongly encouraged. The deadline to apply is 23h59 UTC on 31 January 2024.
